Wow! the first month of school has absolutely flown by. the children have transitioned nicely into this new grade and are such positive and eager little friends. They are learning that they are indeed an important part of our Grade one St. Luke community.

In Math the students continue to explore sorting. The boys and girls worked collaboratively in  groups as well as independently to sort items with one common attribute (color, size, or shape). they also practiced identifying sorting rules in a  variety of groups. We  then made connections to the sorting and classifying that is done on a daily basis. (food, clothes, bus lines etc.)

Number relationships to 20 is ongoing.  we continue practice showing, ordering, and comparing numbers in a variety of ways (ten frame, tally, base ten, pictures). The children love the challenge of mental math games (one more, one less) and are becoming adept at using a number line or hundreds chart to count by 2''s, 5's, and 10's. The number of the day group work is a great way to jump start each lesson and solidify their understanding of numbers 1-20. The children love this activity!

Dreambox Math is up and running. Login instructions were sent home. It is a great program that supplements the learning activities  taking place at school and is highly recommended.  The picture login for girls is the flower and the picture login for boys is the bug.  Have fun!
In English, the students completed some response writing activities. We brainstormed ideas for the changing of the seasons. See below some examples of the response writing that the boys and girls have been doing in class.

On Friday, we introduced the first five Grade One word wall words. we practiced spelling them, finding rhymers, and putting them into sentences (orally). The students looked at where the words will be placed on the word wall next week.

As well, The poem of the week was a great hit this week.  The students are so eager to be "word detectives".....now that they are becoming familiar with some basic sight words. They used their yellow crayon this week for the first time to highlight familiar words (the, and, we).
Please reread the poem to/with your child when it comes home and practice identifying the highlighted words.
