Halloween is definitely in the air! The excitement for this "spooktacular" day has been building and for sure the children will be eager for the related activities that are planned for this coming week.
In English we continue to develop our reading and writing skills. We read the book "Duck, Rabbit" and had lots of interesting discussions as a result. As a class, we graphed our predictions and then The students worked with their pair share partner to give their own personal perspective on the story. Our writing this week continued to focus on the proper sentence structure with some isolated printing practice to master the proper letter formation. Please encourage your child to write at home (grocery lists, cards, letters to relatives) to further support their learning here at school. The boys and girls are very eager to read. With greater regularity, they are recognizing word wall words in different texts (especially on the morning message and during independent reading time). They are also learning to sound out unknown words with the different strategies learned in class. We have many different reading levels within our Grade One community and each child is supported and challenged at his or her specific reading level. Please continue to Read and review the word wall words each night. This practice is essential towards building a confident, independent, and successful reader.

In Math The students have been using a variety of strategies to explore addition. each day we use dice and ten frames on the smartboard to reinforce counting on. Some kids are moving forward with this concept and others will need more practice with manipulatives (counters, pictures, number line) to solidify their understanding. Please continue to use numbers at home. Mental math activities such as one more/one less or even counting practice will be of great help to your child's development. We had great fun this week making pumpkin lanterns. This craft lent itself nicely to our problem solving activities. The boys and girls had to figure out how many eyes were made all together during the craft. The students are asked to explain how they got their answer (strategy) instead of just supplying the correct answer. The boys and girls are beginning to understand that there can be a number of different ways to get the answer.
In health we are just beginning to explore healthy food choices. We will look at the four food groups and make a poster (media) to advertise the importance of healthy eating. In Phys. ed, the boys and girls have been having fun with some cooperative game time with Mrs. O'Callaghan's Grade One class. They love their gym time and as a result their running, balancing, and stopping/starting skills are improving each week.
