It is hard to believe that we are heading out for the May long weekend and that June is just around the corner. Where has the time gone? We are absolutely in "full steam ahead" mode in Grade One.

In Math the children have been learning how to measure with a variety of nonstandard tools (pencils, feet, snap cubes, and paper clips). We discussed the importance of using measurements in our everyday life and the kids made great connections to how they use measurements with their families at home. The students worked with a partner to measure "Sammy The Snake" in the Learning Commons. There was Lots of excitement for this activity!.
We also briefly introduced some probability vocabulary to get the ball rolling for our next unit. We thought up examples that describe, impossible, certain, and sometimes. Next week we will explore probability in greater depth with some fair and unfair spinner activities.
You can help at home by regularly exposing your child to the math that is around them every day. (e.g How many squares are in that window pane? If there are two windows...how many squares would there be all together?

In English, we have been focusing on editing our written work with greater accuracy and independence. The children are very familiar with the "must Have" checklists we use on a regular basis. A big focus heading into Grade Two is to use the word wall and word banks for spelling accuracy. Inventive spelling should be used less and less as your child's writing and spelling skills improve. You can help your child at home by helping him/her to master the spelling of the word wall lists sent home each week and more importantly by encouraging the application of the correct spelling in written assignment.
Our drama unit has begun!!!! It is so fun to see the boys and girls enthusiasm to portray a character that we have read about from our fairy tale selections. We have been working together in small groups, with partners and independently to read through the scripts in order to master new vocabulary. You can help at home by having your child read through his/her lines each night and to ensure the script is returned to school each day.
