anuary has Absolutely flown by here at St. Luke!  The children have had a busy month capped off with a Let's Talk Science presentation last week.  We also kicked off our 17th annual Grade One read-a-thon on Friday. Please check your child's backpack as all the details and pertinent information is enclosed. Also, The toboggan hill continues to be a big success and is the highlight of Wednesday for all of the boys and girls.

In Religion, the students continue to work on their prayer boards. we have had some great discussions in the planning stages and the boys and girls have really tried to make the prayers personal and meaningful to him/her.  The students love hearing the prayers by the older boys and girls on our morning announcements as they are able to make connections to their own prayerful activities in class.

In Math we continue to explore time.  The boys and girls are able to read time to the hour and half hour with good success. This week's focus will be writing time to the hour and half hour.  We also have  5 ipads in our classroom. which we put to good use each day to further develop the student's math and technology skills. We try to have the students access Dreambox on a regular basis through out the week.  Please continue to access Dreambox at home.  This multi-level math program is individualized to meet each child's needs and supports the ontario curriculum.

In English, the boys and girls wrote descriptive stories titled,"My Snowman and I". Their task was to write a few sentences about what he/she did with the snowman YESTERDAY.........and what he/she did would do with the snowman tomorrow.  Their ideas were fantastic.......ask your child what he/she did with the snowman?

In reading we continue to work on our comprehension skills.  This month's reading strategy is asking questions to better understand the text.  I encourage the boys and girls to have "wonderngs" before, during, and after a book that they read or one that is read to them

Thank you for your support and encouragement with your child's home reading program.  Please continue to have your child apply the reading strategies (enclosed in the Snuggle Up duotang) when reading books at home.  We continue to stress these strategies at school and practice them on a daily basis. All of the boys and girls are showing individual gains and good growth in their reading and writing skills.
