In Math, we are knee deep into our Data Management unit. We are really exploring the "ins and outs" of data.
Why do we want that data?
What is the best way to share that data?
What questions does the data make us ask (new wondering)?
We have been creating and interpreting pictographs and bar graphs. The student are learning to compare data sets and ask questions.
We will soon be starting to do some work with Measurement. We will learn that we can measure the length of the sides of 2D shapes using a ruler and and refer back to the ways we can measure angles. To measure angles, we used the right angle as a reference. We decided that angles are either smaller than, bigger than, or equal to a right angle. Ask your child the names for these angles and how we made these angles with our bodies. Also, we will learn about the ways the centimetre, the metre and the kilometre can be used to measure things in various situations. You can help your child at home by giving them different things to measure and ensuring that they use the correct measuring vocabulary and units.
Thank you to parents for supporting your child with homework every week. Please take advantage of the online learning available at home, Dreambox and Math Prodigy are great practice programs.
In Reading, we are focusing on Making Connections. This links very naturally to Remembrance Day and all the discussions that will occur in Religion and Family Life. In Grade 3, connections go deeper. We look for personal and relevant links that allow us to deepen our understanding of the text. Connections can make us feel like we are part of a story. In Writing, we are just introducing Explanatory Writing. This is about explaining how something works, how something is made, or how something is done. It is different from Procedural Writing which focuses on the step by step directions (think recipes). We will be focusing on creating engaging beginnings, middles that are logical and detailed, and endings that wrap up and summarize. We will also use our “Fix It” Rubric to improve our work.
The topic we are presently exploring in Religion is, “The Holy Spirit is at Work Among Us”. This topic relates to the Catholic Graduate Expectation of Dignity of Persons, which is our focus in November. We will be discussing and demonstrating in our actions how respect, peacefulness, equity and fairness towards others are important in all that we do. In Family Life, we are exploring our place in our families.
Physical Education and Health:
We are focusing on co-operative games, good sportsmanship, teambuilding and overall fitness. We do lots of different activities to support health and fitness. As well, we have been provided the amazing opportunity to have three swimming sessions in The Minto pool which furtther promotes our healthy active living.
We are busy perfecting our three songs for the Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre production of The Doll’s House. So that our the children look unified, we are asking the students to wear a white or very light coloured shirt with dark bottoms. A letter with all of the details was sent home in your child's agenda last week.
We continue our study on Plants and Soils. This is the continued focus in Science for this term.
