In english, the boys and girls have had various projects on the go. They created beautiful, descriptive acrostic poems about themselves and improved their journal writing skills with weekend retells. The present goal is to provide more independent writing tasks in preparation for Grade two. The students are given very structured checklists and simple word banks to access during the writing process and are expected to add the appropriate punctuation along the way. Any free writing activities at home will enhance your child's writing skills.
In reading, we have used our read aloud "Charlotte's web" as a springboard to a variety of comprehension activities. The students have made comparisons between the main characters (templeton/Wilbur) and connections to a variety of events in the story. Next week we will act out different parts and share in a large group setting each student's favorite part of the story.
Thank you for reading with your child each night at home and reviewing word wall words for spelling accuracy. The boys and girls are highly motivated by the weekly spelling "check up" and more importantly learning to apply the correct spelling into their writing tasks.
Looking ahead we will soon begin a measurement unit. The children will use a variety of non-standard tools to measure different items both in and out of the class, This unit is very hands on and usually of high interest to the children.
Looking ahead the boys and girls will be examining the purpose and function of different materials in the world and identify/distinguish between matter (solid, liquid, gas)
The Dance unit we had last week was an absolute hit with all of the boys and girls. The instructor was spot on and kept the kids actively engaged and eager to show their own personal'dance floor moves". We had a blast and I hope the kids shared their enthusiasm with you at home.
